is The Thane of Vare
Canada
HELL YES

:iconvarethane::iconphantomteacup:

I suck at talking about myself. Ask me something if you want to know it! I'll probably answer!

In the meantime, here are some things:

:bulletblack: I live in Canada
:bulletblack: My full name is extremely long and (to some) inexplicably unpronounceable
:bulletblack: I will eat almost anything with sugar in it
:bulletblack: I draw a webcomic called Chirault
:bulletblack: I spend way more time drawing than is really healthy
:bulletblack: I have a second account on hand for paintchats and finished-but-not-polished sketches; it can be found here: ~ars-goetica
:bulletblack: I love comic books and also anything steampunk!
:bulletblack: Commission TOS here.

I can be found in the following other places:

Tumblr | Anipan | Vimeo
It's been awhile since I made a new journal... I have been loathe to push the features post off my front page, but I wanted to mention this here! Back in December I participated in a secret santa thingamajig (where you sign up and get given the name of someone else who signed up, and you draw something for them, and then on a prearranged date everyone posts the things they drew for everyone else and you find out who drew for you and it's awesome).

It was a lot of fun! And the group is organizing another art swap for the summer months, since the forums have remained so active even though the season for events with 'santa' in their name is long over.

For anyone who might be interested, the forums are here, and the thread to sign up for the summertime event (deadline May 28) is here.

Ahh TCAF is this weekend, I am so excited! I'm not exhibiting or anything but I'll be wandering around wishing I could get up the nerve to talk to strangers. Though I am looking forward to seeing *secondlina and ~DQBunny again! :D

Have been thinking about splitting up my tumblr so that I can have a more focused art blog-- anyone who uses tumblr and has an opinion on such things, feel free to tell me why it's a good or bad idea. Right now my queue is a 50/50 mixture of art and reblogs, posting twice daily (one art thing and one reblog thing); but I'm starting to wonder if I should go in and delete all the reblogged stuff and have my blog be JUST art. The problem with that is when I actually go to look at the posts I reblogged, they're so awesome I feel bad thinking about deleting them :C What do?

(I did make a separate blog for the webcomic, though, because I was feeling sort of bad about having that content all mixed in with the other stuff.)

....Also, might open up for commissions again in a couple of weeks-- probably after the weekend of the 18th, since I have a wedding to go to then, but afterwards I will be more free. In the meantime I've been doing miscellaneous quick speedpaints a couple nights a week, to try to get better at things like landscapes and vehicles. I stuck some of them in Sta.sh, might put one or two into my gallery later on down the line...

And lastly.... awesome things! 8D

Quick question!!

What kind of paper do you use when you are doing comic pages with a brush pen and greyscale markers?

Wah, I can see that there's a muro drawing but it seems to be blank....

.....Um, anyway. The paper type varies a bit every so often, because I do all of it in sketchbooks and sometimes when I fill one up I have trouble finding another of the same brand, so I switch to another brand. The main thing all of the books have in common is that they all look approximately like this (black hardbound cover, perfect-bound spine, smooth white paper).

Each brand I've used has slightly different paper though, so that answer won't be terribly helpful. Some of them have paper that is very absorbent and slightly textured-- I don't like it as much as the stuff that is smooth and less absorbent, because it will suck in the marker inks very quickly and make them look streaky when I try to blend large areas. Paper that is too unabsorbent isn't ideal either, though, because you can get some really unpredictable bleeding effects and heavy blending can make the marker ink bleed through several sheets of paper even with an extra sheet stuck in betweeen.

I guess, if you're thinking of trying a similar technique, all I can say is experiment a lot with what's available to you! Bristol paper is a good standby for comics work and it takes markers and inks well, but is really pricy; avoid paper that is really roughly textured or that has too visible a grain, unless you want to be fighting it constantly to get the effects that you want. Printer cartridge paper actually works really nicely with markers, but I'd avoid it for finished work because it will go yellow after a couple of years (so it's good for testing/experiments, but not so much for the finished pages or for covers or other illustrations).

Yeah, I accidentally hit the muro button and didn't know how to make it go away XD Sorry! Twas blank all along.

And wow! That was such a fantastic reply, I didn't expect so much! X3 I have done marker work on computer printer paper and it works okay but when I get into blending a lot it bleeds outside the lines :I

I'll look at the art store next time I'm out XD Peek for a nice sketchbook just for some marker work commit myself by committing money XD

Ahh that's good to know, I thought it was this computer being glitchy.

Hehe, I can talk forever about markers and other art supplies, so no worries. XD With regards to bleeding, that's a big part of why I use such thick lines in my comics-- it gives me more leeway for the markers, so I can get more gestural with my strokes or have them bleed everywhere without it noticeably going outside my shapes.

I use these sketchbooks for all sorts of things, not just markers-- if you do grab one, you don't have to feel obligated to use it just for comics or just for markers unless you want to. They're good all-around sketchbooks. :B
